The Duke

Friday, April 24th, 2009

The name “Duke” is not a title, but a given name. He was named after his father, Halapu Kahanamoku, who was christened “Duke” by Bernice Pauahi Bishop. Growing up on the outskirts of Waikiki (near the present site of the Hilton Hawaiian Village), Kahanamoku spent his youth as a bronzed beach boy. It was at Waikiki Beach where he developed his surfing and swimming skills. Board of choice, 114lbs of wood from a Koa tree reaching 16ft tall, with no skeg..

Duke defended Hawaii and his world records for swimming through 3 Olympics in 1912, 1920, and 1924, as part of the U.S. Early on judges weren’t too fond of “Duke” being from Hawaii, claiming that Kahanamoku was aided by ocean currents during amateur races. Between Olympic competitions, and after retiring from the Olympics, Kahanamoku traveled internationally, particularly Australia and the United States, to give swimming exhibitions. It was during this period that he popularized the sport of surfing, previously known only in Hawaii, by incorporating surfing exhibitions into these visits as well.

While living in Newport Beach, California on June 14, 1925, Kahanamoku rescued eight men from a fishing vessel that capsized in heavy surf while attempting to enter the city’s harbor. Twenty-nine fishermen went into the water and seventeen perished. Using his surfboard, he was able to make quick trips back and forth to shore to increase the number of sailors rescued.[3] Two other surfers saved four more fishermen. Newport’s police chief at the time called Duke’s efforts “the most superhuman surfboard rescue act the world has ever seen.”

Duke Kahanamoku was the first person to be inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame and the Surfing Hall of Fame.

Kahanamoku is an original defender of Hawaii, serving as sheriff of Honolulu, Hawaii from 1932 to 1961. 13 consecutive terms.

Here’s the Defend Hawaii tribute to Duke… come to the store to pick up our Limited amount of these new shirts!

-Mahalo Duke!

ALSO!, THE SHIRT WILL FINALLY BE RELEASED AT SINDICATION! THIS SUNDAY, GET YOURS! THERE WILL BE A LIMITED QUANTITY FOR THE STORE, SO DON’T MISS OUT ON IT

DEFEND x FITTED

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Aloha.

ku.pale: nvt. Defense; to defend, ward off.

The brand and name Defend Hawaii is now just as synonymous with just about every other local, cult-classic brand that has etched it’s mark on Hawaii’s underground scene. Their themes run anywhere from borderline anti-political messages and even esoteric sovereign issues at times. But the all around message is in the name, which is key: DEFEND HAWAII. Even though most of their designs prescribe a “Get Down or Lay Down” message, there’s a powerful ALOHA stamp behind everything. There’s also a strong physical and visual essence of pride, respect, honor and dignity on almost every design they’ve put out.

Everything said above segues into our next release / collaboration with Defend Hawaii, dubbed “Kupale.” The graphic portrayed on the shirt represents the Bay Of Pigs Invasion in Cuba (better known as La Batalla de Girón). This is an important piece of history, although there were a few minor hiccups. The main purpose of this invasion was to disrupt southern Cuba’s guerilla headed by Fidel Castro, and to also overthrow the corrupt, amoral dictator. Printed on white & black, it features hands of soldiers raising arms (pun intended) with the Hawaiian flag behind it. Left sleeve features the crown & crest, right sleeve features Defend Hawaii’s logo, and a crown hit on the back.

This will be available SUNDAY, Apr. 19th @ 11 AM at Fitted (white tee), and
at Sindication in Windward Mall (black tee) @ 10am. And VERY LIMITED bundle on our online shop… Big shouts to Pkaes, Coach Mike, and Ola!

Indonesian Canvas Factory aka March 21st

March 24, 2009

We’d like to thank all that made it out to the “Project DisFUNKshion” event this past Saturday.. It produced something that doesn’t happen too often with this economic crisis, a crowded Windward Mall.

Big Ups first of all to Paul (No Fear) and Mike (Sindication) for the amazing idea of having such an event. The line for the meet-n-greet autograph signing with Rashad Evans was ridiculous. There was a constant buzz and loads of spectators watching the live drawings/paintings, which included international, national, and locally acclaimed artists. The fashion show was definitely a big hit! With dance performances by 24/7 Danceforce, ABC breakers, and Waikiki B-Boyz just to name a few, and more than 10 stores showcasing their goods. The lovely April and her visionary fashion sense hooked up the models with their outfits, along with running everything else Sindication does and is. Peep the steez…

Kel-Roc rips it everytime!

WAIKIKI B-BOYZ

The Tattoo Contest was definitely a sight to behold. Contestants from the different categories, Asian, Traditional/Americana, Polynesian, Black & Grey, and Color, all lined up in their Inked Up flesh to be scored by our guest judges. Judges consisted of members from 808 Tattoo, House of Ink, Tattoos by Libra, Unauthorized Ink (Big Tiny), and Zodakism (Zodak)

Star Wars!!

Doc Dread!

Even the ladies were showing it off

This girl won the Asian category!

Thank you again to all the judges!! and the scores please….

Here are the winners of each category!! Congrats!

So all in all I think we and the Windward Mall staff were content with the turnout! We’d like to extend a deep Thank You to everyone that made it out to the event, if not, we’re working to have another one soon.. Big things, big things! Be sure to frequent Sindication to keep fresh to death with your gear.

HOLLA

moving… again?

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

If you’ve heard the rumors about us moving locations again.. they’re true. Don’t be scared though if you come strolling by and we’re not there. We won’t be in the same location near the theatre as of January 23rd 2009. BUT we will continue to be in Windward Mall at a different spot, which we hope works out in our benefit. This means if you’ve had your eye on a little *sum’in sum’in*, come get it already! Check the blog frequently to stay up-to-date on our status. Thank you guys for all the support.

Much appreciated and Always reciprocated.
